Croft Lake

Croft Lake is located at Bandon, Oregon on the Oregon coast. The lake is a part of the New River Watershed, and it receives water from a variety of surface streams and groundwater seeps. Croft Lake is a dune lake, and it flows out into the New River which ultimately joins the Pacific Ocean. Many thanks go to Brad Howe for hosting this field site and for sharing his expertise.

Major Issues:

• The dunes in the surrounding area have undergone extensive accelerated stabilization in the past 30 years due to the introduction of exotic plant species such as European beach grass.
• Steelhead and coho salmon enter the late from Croft Lake Outlet.
• Increased vegetation in stream channels.
• Areas near the lake are used for commercial cranberry farming. The water draw down used to saturate the cranberry bogs literally drains the streams dry.
• Samples were collected to help understand the effect of dune stabilization on the hydrology of the watershed.
